PTA

The PTA Speaking Tour is a new service being offered in conjunction with our Road Tour services. In order to maximize an author's time in a particular market PTA will arrange for one, sometimes two, speaking engagements. Besides booking local media interviews on TV, Radio and Print, PTA also will arrange for a bookseller to come and sell books at the event and assist with calendar listings.

PTA has extensive contacts with local business groups around the country including: Chambers of Commerce, CEO Clubs, YPO, YEO, American Marketing Assoc. Chapters, Sales & Marketing Exec. Chapters, Business Journals, Economic, University, and Entrepreneur Clubs.

In addition, PTA has conducted "Church Tours" and has relationships with Unity Churches around the country as well as other mainstream churches that host events.

Recent Speaking Tours include:

  • Jack Canfield, The Success Principles (HarperCollins)
  • Harvey Mackay, We Got Fired! (Ballantine Books)
  • Essie Mae Washington-Williams, The Senator's Daughter (HarperCollins)
  • Charles Rossotti, Many Unhappy Returns (Harvard Business School Press)

PTA can book as many as twenty or thirty cities for a full-scale campaign or a targeted campaign of five to ten cities. Ideally, we have six months lead-time or more to book these events but can work with a shorter lead-time. Case histories are available upon request.
For more information, please contact David Hahn 212/593-5847 or hahnd@plannedtvarts.com.

Tips From the Top

Eat, Sleep, and Breathe Publicity

"In this business, you can never wash the dinner dishes and say they are done. You have to keep doing them constantly." — Mary Wells Lawrence, Advertising Legend.

Publicity never sleeps it's an ongoing 24/7 process that never stops. Since you're the product, you're also your own best marketing tool. Publicity accompanies you everywhere. Even when you hire marketing or promotion professionals, you're still responsible for your own publicity.

Self-promotion is essential; you must become your own PR firm. You can't be shy or embarrassed, or rely on others to champion your cause. Look at the successful people you know. They quickly let everyone know who they are, what they do, and how important it is. Follow their lead.

  • Learn to spot promotional opportunities and how to capitalize on them.
  • When you meet people, take the opportunity to sell yourself.
  • Carry your product, brochures and business cards with you - everywhere. (If your product is too big to lug around, carry pictures that you can show easily.)
  • Become a walking advertisement. Put your logo and company name on anything that people might see.

Self-promotion conveys enthusiasm. It inspires, excites and makes people want to help you out. So give them the chance!

An excerpt from the National Best-Seller GUERRILLA PUBLICITY: Hundreds of Sure-fire Tactics to Get Maximum Sales for Minimum Dollars by Rick Frishman, Jill Lublin and Jay Conrad Levinson.

Getting to Know You

Based on the "Getting to Know Your Friends" E-mail that comes around every few months, here are some fun questions and some serious questions that the Tip Sheet posed to Chad Exley, the producer for "Nat & Drew in the Morning" at CKZZ-FM, in Vancouver, BC. Hope you get to know him a little better so next time you speak with him you can talk about something else besides whatever you are pitching.

A:
" Are We There Yet?"

Q: What is your favorite TV show?
A:
Seinfeld

Q: What is your favorite cuisine?
A:
Anything my wife cooks - especially her chili with pepperoni and cheeseburger meatloaf!

Q: What foods do you dislike?
A:
Tofu and anything with soy.

Q: What is your favorite CD at the moment?
A:
The new Jack Johnson (even though I do not actually have it yet!)

Q: If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation where would you go?
A:
Hawaii

Q: Where would you retire to?
A:
Hawaii

Q: Where were you born?
A:
Vancouver, BC

Q: Favorite sport to watch?
A:
Hockey (Ice)

Q: Do you have any pets?

Q: What did you want to be when you were little?
A:
A Gigolo or an Accountant

Q: Who was your most memorable guest?
A:
Darrin Zeer - Wrote a song and sang it accapella for Nat & Drew for having to reschedule!!

Q: What characteristic do you despise in a publicist? In a guest?
A:
In a publicist: Someone who is impolite, does not respond in a timely manner and does not follow through on what they say. In a guest: Someone who has not taken the time to listen to our show on the internet before to get a feel for the hosts.

Q: What's the best characteristic in a guest? In a publicist?
A:
In a guest: Someone who is their own person, are entertaining and get that they are not just talking to the hosts but a large audience, however, to only one listener at a time. No "all you folks" type of thing.
In a publicist: Someone who is friendly, detailed and consistent.

Q: Do you really read press kits?
A:
No - especially if it is not catered directly to me, and definitely not if I am just part of a huge VISIBLE mailing list. At least humor me by cutting and pasting something with my address and insert my name. Man that sounds anal but it's the truth!

Q: What's the clincher for you when booking a guest?
A:
Fit for our audience - both those that would actually be interested in the guest and their topic and what else is in it for those who may not be.

Q: E-mail or Phone - what's your preference?
A:
Email - It's almost impossible to archive a phone call.

Q: Does bribery work? (Just Kidding)
A:
Yes - especially to me directly!!
