Surfin'

Forbes magazine described this site by saying "It doesn't sell books, but this perky, well-organized portal links you to everything you could ever want to know about them." The Wall Street Journal said, "BookSpot is a hub for online book reviews, reading lists and bookstores." www.BookSpot.com describe themselves as a free resource center that simplifies the search for the best book-related content on the Web. Featured sites are hand-selected by BookSpot.com editors and organized into intuitive categories, such as best-seller lists, genres, book reviews, electronic texts, book news and more. The Tip Sheet says, "Need we say more."

Curious as to who's being reviewed and where? Instead of searching all of the individual media sites, log on to American Bookselling Association's www.news.bookweb.org/mediaguide/. Here you can find listings of who is being reviewed in the top newspapers, being interviewed on radio, and who's broadcasting whom on television in their online magazine Bookselling This Week.

Another good collection of book reviews from major online media sites can be found at www.reviewsofbooks.com. The general premise is that they provide book reviews that are available without you having to register at a site or pay to read them. The site usually lists at least three reviews per book to help a reader determine whether or not they wish to purchase the title.

Tips From the Top

MAKE IT PERSONAL
by Brian Feinblum, Chief Marketing Officer, PTA

We know that creating your book is a labor of love -- and time and money. But the biggest step you have to take comes once the book is printed and ready to be sold. You need to have an aggressive publicity and marketing plan -- or else your book gets lost in the 175,000 new books published annually. And when you're promoting your book, particularly to the news media, you need to make it stand out.

The best way to show off your book's uniqueness is to make it personal. To differentiate your book from others on a similar topic is not to highlight the contents, but to spotlight your very own story. You are one of a kind -- at least until cloning takes over!

Every day the media receives calls regarding authors and potential guests. They have a diet book, a first-time novel, a tome on how to make money, a book on how to improve one's relationship, literature on how to cook up 500 tasty recipes and many more topics. In one week they may have spoken to several people in each genre. Multiply that a hundred fold and you get an idea on what you're up against. Link your work to who you are -- your experiences, your credentials, your personality. They must be able to hear a unique voice from the author so that you stand out.

So the next time you discuss your book, discuss yourself.

Putting a Face on PTA

Scott Piro has been performing at a high level from the day he came here nearly four years ago. He is currently a senior publicist with seven years of PR experience. As a graduate of NYU with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, this Sunnyside, Queens resident is as much a media personality as he is a publicist. On more than one occasion, Scott has gotten himself on the local news. He got camera time for running the NYC Marathon in a Madonna costume -- cone chest and all! Though Scott is always in motion, he sat down with us for a chat. His Q and A is below:

Q: What do you like best about your job/PTA?
I am constantly working on something different at PTA. I like that. I also really like getting the right guest on the right show at the right time--when the client and the media both feel really happy about the booking; I like approaching the job from an attitude of it being about service.

Q: What would you do if you weren't here?
Be a weatherman on TV news.

Q: If you could work for the news media, who would it be?
Good Morning America.

Q: What do few people know about you?
I skydived from 15,000 feet. I've also run 10 marathons.

Q: Any hobbies?
Running, lifting weights.

Q: Most embarrassing moment?
Having a reporter take something personally and write negatively about me in his column.

Q: Thing you're most proud of?
Volunteering in the kitchen on Wednesdays for the last four years at God's Love We Deliver and being a part of the Volunteer's Reader Program at the Lighthouse International for the last three.

Q: Biggest accomplishment professionally or personally?
Singing onstage at Carnegie Hall with the New York City Gay Men's Chorus last year.

Q: Who is your hero -- aside from me?
Madonna!
