Quotation of the Month

"The paperback is very interesting but I find it will never replace the hardcover book – it makes a very poor doorstop."

Surfin'

Your author is on the road. You miraculously have booked SEVEN new interviews for him/her in their upcoming city (work with us here - it's called suspension of disbelief) and need to reach them immediately. You ring the hotel - not checked-in yet. You ring their cell phone - not answering. You do not know where they are in transit - has their plane landed, was it late, did it even take off? http://flightview.com/ and http://trackaflight.com can help you out. Both will track your author's flight and let you know if they've arrived, are late or never took off at all. They only thing they cannot tell you is whether or not your author got on the plane in the first place.

If you are trying to locate a media website be it newspaper, radio, magazine or television, a terrific website is http://newslink.org. You can search via geographic region, by topic, and for print by weekly, daily or monthly. The site also includes links to newspapers in other countries. So for example, if you needed to find a list of all the WB affiliates across the country, this would be an easy place to start.

A helpful site concerning area codes is http://www.nationalnanpa.com. From their home page you can navigate to a map of the United States that tells you the area codes all across the nation. All you need to do is click on a state and it pops up, very easy to use and read. In addition, on another portion of this site, you can do a quick search for an area code by entering the city and state.

Not that we would ever advocate doing anything but hard work at your desk, but if you happen to have a minute and want to play, http://www.free-games-net.com is the spot. From Z-Ball to Monopoly, these free games will occupy hours of your time - after work hours of your time that is.

New Feature

The Tip Sheet took a moment out of our busy booking schedule to sit down with Shawn Michaels, host and producer of WOBM-FM, Ocean County Breakfast Show along with Sue Moll, and ask a few quick questions. (WOBM-FM is the #2 Adult Contemporary in Monmouth-Ocean/Market #51). Here's what Shawn had to say:

Q: How long have you been in radio?
I've been in radio for nearly 20 years. Sue has been in radio for 7 years.

Q: In regards to booking a guest on your show, what is the most unique approach a publicist have ever taken?
I'd have to say the approach of begging was quite unique. But seriously, I'd say that sending a review copy of the guests' book is all it usually takes to grab my attention.

Q: What do you wish that publicists would do more? What should they stop doing?
Publicists should maybe find more "different" swag to go with the usual book, CD, or DVD. As far as what they should stop doing, nothing really. I haven't met any who don't usually get the hint when you are not interested.

Q: Who is the best person that you've ever interviewed, and why?
Former President Bill Clinton. It was while he was in office and was a fascinating interview. He was speaking to us about Health Care Reform at the time...and it was great. Michael J. Fox was also a great interview because he gets involved in so many worthy programs. He spoke to us about Ocean of Love, which deals with children and cancer. He was awesome.
