Prose from the Pros

Freelance Writer Barbara Hey

  • What do you enjoy most about your job?
I am a freelance writer, so the best thing about what I do is variety and flexibility. Everything I do, think or hear about can be potentially used as a story. And something I learn about for one story can be changed and used for a story in another outlet. I write for local papers here in Colorado, the Denver Post, the Boulder Daily Camera, and for magazines, Colorado Avid Golfer, Better Nutrition, Natural Foods Merchandiser. And because I worked for years in New York as a magazine editor and writer, I work for national media as well, publications such as Parenting, My Generation, Health.
  • How do you prefer to be pitched story ideas from publicists?
As a freelancer, I might be more open to pitches from publicists than overworked, e-mail inundated staff editors. I welcome information because it helps me come up with ideas to then suggest to the editors I work with and keeps me informed of things I might not otherwise hear about. For publicists, going through well-connected freelancers might work to their benefit. If we like an idea, we can cut through the information overload and make a query directly to the editor, sort of be the ones to champion an idea. As for how to pitch, e-mail is best.
  • The worst thing a publicist can do is...
    To not follow through.
